COPY YOU LOUD AND CLEAR YOUR MAJESTY

To the best of my recollection, a conversation I had with King Hussein of Jordan in 1977

by Donald Courcy, VE1CG (VE1RI at the time)

May 11, 2017

It was late one evening in April 1977. I had just completed a QSO on two meters (146.52 MHz simplex) with a ham radio operator in North Sydney and I was getting ready to shut down the station for the night when a call was heard over the speaker.

I immediately recognized the call sign of King Hussein of Jordan. I also knew from the National News that he had been visiting Ottawa. He must have been listening to my earlier QSO on 146.52 MHz using a two meter rig onboard his plane.  I knew the QSO would be short. We were on VHF simplex and the plane would quickly leave the area.

IT IS AN HONOUR TO SPEAK WITH YOU YOUR MAJESTY. THE NAME HERE IS DONALD AND MY QTH IS THE TOWN OF DOMINION ON CAPE BRETON ISLAND IN NOVA SCOTIA. I AM LOCATED ON A CLIFF ONLY 6 KILOMETRES FROM TABLE HEAD IN GLACE BAY WHERE GUGLIELMO MARCONI TRANSMITTED THE FIRST MESSAGE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC IN DECEMBER 1902. OVER

I THOUGHT THE FIRST MARCONI MESSAGE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC WAS IN DECEMBER 1901 AND WAS RECEIVED IN NEWFOUNDLAND. OVER

TO BE PRECISED YOUR MAJESTY, THE 1901 MARCONI ACHIEVEMENT DID NOT INCLUDE A RADIO MESSAGE. IT WAS ONLY THE LETTER "S" WHICH WAS TRANSMITTED FROM POLDHU, ENGLAND AND WAS RECEIVED AT SIGNAL HILL IN ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND WHICH WAS NOT PART OF CANADA AT THE TIME. MARCONI COULD NOT BUILD A STATION IN NEWFOUNDLAND BECAUSE ANOTHER COMPANY HAD THE MONOPOLY OVER TRANSATLANTIC TRAFFIC THERE. THIS MONOPOLY DID NOT INCLUDE CANADA SO MARCONI CAME TO CAPE BRETON ISLAND AT THE INVITATION OF THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT AND BUILT  A STATION AT TABLE HEAD IN GLACE BAY. THIS IS THE LOCATION WHERE THE FIRST MESSAGE WAS SENT ACROSS THE ATLANTIC IN DECEMBER 1902. IT WAS ALSO THE FIRST RADIO SIGNAL TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC FROM WEST TO EAST. THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1902 EVENT IS COMING UP THIS DECEMBER AND WE WILL BE OPERATING SPECIAL EVENT STATION CHARLIE GOLF ONE CHARLIE ROMEO TO COMMEMORATE THE EVENT. OVER

I have lived and worked in five Canadian provinces and I have operated under many call signs in the past. The above QSO with King Hussein took place when I operated under call sign VE1RI from 1976 to 1980. When I transferred from DOC to CRTC in 1980, I transferred call sign VE1RI to Radio Inspector Angelo Costantino, my colleague in the Sydney DOC office. He still has that call sign today. Following the CRTC, and after 15 years in the private sector, including 5 years with Telesat Canada, I came back to Spectrum Management in Toronto in 1997, transferred to Moncton in 2004, to Montreal in 2007 and retired in 2011.
